Bringing the Razer Phone 2 Back to Life: Charging Port Replacement After 7 Years

When the Razer Phone 2 first launched back in 2018, it turned heads with its bold, industrial design, front-facing stereo speakers, 120Hz display, and gaming-first features. Even by today’s standards, it still looks sharp and unique in a sea of near-identical smartphone slabs.

But like many ageing devices, the Razer Phone 2 isn’t immune to wear and tear—especially when it comes to the charging port.

⚠️ The Common Issue: Faulty Charging Port

Over time, many users report that their Razer Phone 2 either charges intermittently, only at certain angles, or completely refuses to charge. This is a common fault, and in most cases, the culprit is a loose or damaged USB-C port flex cable.

In the Razer Phone 2, the charging port is mounted on a small daughterboard, which is connected to the motherboard by a ribbon cable. Due to its design, the port is secured with just two small screws. If these loosen slightly over time (which they often do), plugging in a charger repeatedly puts strain on the flex cable, eventually causing it to fail.

🔧 Step-by-Step Repair: How We Fixed It

Here’s how we tackled the repair in our Sydney-based workshop:

1. Removing the Glass Back Cover

The back cover is made of fragile glass and is sealed tight. We used self-heating pads to warm it to about 60°C, then carefully lifted it using a suction cup and pry tools, adding alcohol to loosen the adhesive.

2. Teardown & Inspection

Inside, the phone is surprisingly neat and modular—easy to work on. We disconnected the battery, LED light ribbon, and wireless charging coil, then removed the midframe and battery assembly in one piece.

3. Replacing the Charging Port

The charging board came out easily after disconnecting a few flex cables and removing three screws. We installed a brand-new USB-C port, checked the cable connections, and made sure everything was secure to prevent future issues.

4. Testing and Reassembly

Before sealing the phone up, we powered it on and ran full tests—charging, USB data connection, speaker audio—everything passed. We reused the original adhesive and added B7000 glue for added strength before reinstalling the back cover.

✅ Results: Like New Again

After replacing the charging port, the Razer Phone 2 charges smoothly, just like when it was new. For owners of this iconic device, this repair is an affordable way to keep it running—whether as a backup phone, gaming device, or daily driver.

📌 Final Thoughts

If you're still holding onto a Razer Phone 2 and experiencing charging issues, don’t bin it just yet. A professional port replacement can give it a second life—and with its unique design and powerful speakers, it’s still a great device in 2025.
